West Nile Virus Cases Rise in Colorado
State Health Department Issues Warning
Residents Urged to Take Precautions
As of August 25, 2023, Colorado has recorded its first case of West Nile virus this year, concerning public health officials. The case was confirmed in a Larimer County resident who is currently hospitalized with severe symptoms.
This marks the first human case of West Nile virus in Colorado since 2020, when the state saw its largest outbreak in history. Over 3,000 people were infected with the virus that year, and 47 died.
The state health department is urging Coloradans to take precautions to avoid infection, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors, and removing standing water around their homes. Symptoms of West Nile virus may include fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Most people who are infected with West Nile virus do not get sick. However, about 20% of people develop a fever, which can range from mild to severe. In rare cases, the virus can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord).
There is no specific treatment for West Nile virus, but supportive care can help manage symptoms. There is also a vaccine available to prevent the virus, but it is only recommended for people who are at high risk of infection.
