Some devices will now show up as MSFT 50 XBOX

New DHCP Client-side feature in Windows 10 April 2018 Update

What does this mean?

Some devices will now show up as "MSFT 50 XBOX" due to a new DHCP Client-side feature in Windows 10 April 2018 Update. MSFT is Microsoft's stock symbol. This change was made to improve the accuracy of device identification and to better reflect the type of device that is connecting to the network.

This change will affect all devices that are running Windows 10 April 2018 Update or later. If you are using an older version of Windows, your device will continue to show up as "MSFT 50" in DHCP logs.

If you are concerned about the privacy implications of this change, you can disable the new DHCP Client-side feature by following these steps:

  1. Open the Registry Editor.
  2. Navigate to the following key:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
  4. Create a new DWORD value named DisableDhcpClientSideFeature
  5. Set the value of the new DWORD value to 1.
  6. Close the Registry Editor.
  7. Restart your computer.
