Yafai and Gonzalez Suffer Knockdowns in Prelim Title Fights on Martinez-Gonzalez Undercard
Martinez's Title Not on Line
The WBO Flyweight title will not be on the line for Julio Cesar Martinez when he faces Roman Gonzalez on Saturday in San Diego. Martinez initially lost his title on the scales when he failed to make the 112 lb limit for the division. He was subsequently stripped of his title by the WBO, which ruled Martinez would only be able to win the vacant WBC Flyweight Championship by defeating Gonzalez.
Yafai and Gonzalez Suffer Knockdowns
In separate preliminary title fights, Liam Yafai and Esteban Gonzalez both suffered knockdowns. Yafai was dropped twice in rounds eight and nine of his WBA Super Flyweight title fight against Norbelto Jimenez. Yafai managed to rally and win a unanimous decision. Esteban Gonzalez was knocked down twice in the fourth round of his WBO Light Flyweight title fight against Elwin Soto. Gonzalez was unable to recover and lost by TKO in the sixth round.
