Sunak's close parliamentary aide under probe over bet on election date
Rishi Sunak's close parliamentary aide Craig Williams is facing a gambling investigation after he allegedly placed a bet on the date of the July election three days before it was called.
Williams, who has served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister since October 2022, is alleged to have placed the bet with a bookmaker on 27 July, three days before Boris Johnson announced the election would be held on 12 December.
The investigation is being carried out by the Gambling Commission, which has the power to impose fines or even revoke the licenses of bookmakers who breach its rules.
A spokesperson for the Gambling Commission said: "We are aware of the allegations and are making inquiries."
A spokesperson for Craig Williams said: "Craig Williams denies any wrongdoing. He has not been contacted by the Gambling Commission and is unaware of any investigation."
